Gabion boxes are rectangular cages made from mechanically woven, double-twisted hexagonal steel wire mesh. Filled with stone on site, they form flexible, free-draining gravity structures that settle with the ground instead of cracking. Terracare manufactures gabion boxes to IS 16014:2024 for retaining walls, river training works, bridge abutment protection and erosion control across India.

Double-twisted hexagonal mesh

Wires are twisted twice at each joint so the mesh does not unravel if a single wire is cut or damaged.

Heavy zinc / Zn-Al / PVC coating

Galvanised, zinc-aluminium alloy and PVC-coated wire options for soil, water and marine exposure.

Diaphragms every metre

Internal partitions keep stone fill in place and keep the box square during filling.

Flexible and free-draining

Hydrostatic pressure never builds up behind a gabion; the structure flexes with differential settlement.

Custom sizes

Standard 1 m, 1.5 m, 2 m, 3 m and 4 m lengths, 0.5 m and 1 m heights; other sizes on request.

Supplied flat-packed

Boxes arrive folded with lacing wire or ring fasteners, cutting transport cost and site assembly time.

What is a gabion box used for?

A gabion box is a wire-mesh cage filled with stone to build retaining walls, river bank protection, bridge abutment protection, check dams and erosion-control structures. Because the stone fill drains freely and the mesh is flexible, gabion walls tolerate ground movement far better than rigid concrete.

Which Indian standard covers gabion boxes?

IS 16014:2024 is the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for mechanically woven, double-twisted, hexagonal wire mesh gabions, revet mattresses and rock-fall netting. Terracare manufactures to this standard.

What is the difference between galvanised and PVC-coated gabions?

Galvanised (zinc or zinc-aluminium) gabions are suited to normal soil and freshwater exposure. PVC-coated gabions add a polymer layer over the galvanised wire for polluted water, marine and highly corrosive environments, giving a longer design life.

What gabion box sizes does Terracare supply?

Standard sizes are 1 m, 1.5 m, 2 m, 3 m and 4 m long, 1 m wide and 0.5 m or 1 m high, with diaphragms at 1 m centres. Custom sizes can be manufactured to project drawings.
